This website gives interesting information about the painter, illustrator and winner of the Albrecht Dürer Award Fritz Griebel (1899-1976).

In 1948, after the end of World War II, he became the first director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, and he remained its director until 1957. He was professor of Painting and the Graphic Arts at the academy from 1946 to 1966. In addition to these functions he worked as an artist.

An extraordinary versatility characterises his work, which includes figurative as well as abstract representations. The essential theme of his art is the human being in a harmonious and peaceful world.

His artistic expression is multifaceted and the techniques employed are manifold. The pure forms Griebel makes use of are prefigured by the art of the silhouette, which he applied and developed in his oil paintings.
