Curriculum vitae

1899 Born on August 22nd at Unfinden/Lower Franconia. In the same year the family moves to Heroldsberg near Nuremberg, where his father takes up a church appointment as minister.
1916 While still a pupil at the Melanchthon-Gymnasium in Nuremberg, Griebel becomes interested in the art of the silhouette. This interest is mainly stimulated by the book Three Hundred Years of the Art of the Silhouette in Germany by Martin Knapp, published in 1916.
1917 Griebel attends the school of arts and crafts in Nuremberg as a student of Rudolf Schiestl.
1922 Continues his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, where he later joins the masterclass of Hans Meid. He wins first prize at a competition organised by the magazine The Poster, which leads to the sale of two of his works. Publication of his first book with silhouettes, God’s Garden: Silhouettes by Fritz Griebel accompanied by old songs by Der Bund in Nuremberg.
1924 In October the Kunstverein in Erlangen exhibits works of Fritz Griebel and Georg Holl at the Orangerie. The exhibition includes silhouettes by Griebel.
1925 Griebel provides 42 silhouettes to illustrate the book The Little Wandering Star and other Fairy Tales for Big and Small Children by Ohm Waldbart, published by Kurt-Scholtze in Leipzig.
1927 Griebel settles down in Heroldsberg as a freelance artist.
1928 Publication of A Poem by Henry W. Longfellow by Ernst Fromman & Sohn in Nuremberg, translated by Etta Federn-Kohlhaas and with drawings by Fritz Griebel.
1929 From January 12th to February 2nd a selection of 120 silhouettes made between 1920 and 1928 is exhibited in Nuremberg at the rectory in Lorenz. The second edition of Griebel’s small book God’s Garden is published by Franken-Verlag Sommer & Schorr, Feuchtwangen.
1930 From May 24th to June 2nd Griebel organises an exhibition with watercolours, drawings and pastels, mainly landscapes of the region around Florence and of Franconia, in his studio at the Yellow Castle in Heroldsberg.
1931 From October 7th to November 1st Griebel organises an exhibition of paintings and watercolours dating from from 1924 to 1931. The exhibition takes place in the new home of his parents into which they had not moved yet at that moment. It is located in Heroldsberg in a street which is called today Peter-Vischer-Weg.
1932 From November 23rd to December 4th the city of Nuremberg presents a Fritz Griebel exhibition with 40 paintings and 120 drawings, watercolours and pastels at the Norishalle.
1932 Griebel receives the Albecht Dürer Award of the city of Nuremberg.
1933 The Kunstverein in Erlangen organises a Griebel exhibition in the Orangerie in April. Among the art works exhibited is a large number of silhouettes. From November 5th to Novmber 26th, the Society for the Art of Drawing organises the exhibition "Fritz Griebel, journey to Italy" in its exhibition room at the Cramer-Klett-Palais in Nuremberg. The exhibition consists of about 60 watercolours, drawings and probably also silhouettes realised between 1929 and 1933.
1935 In October the Franconian Gallery in Nuremberg presents under the title "Four artists from Franconia" the painters Reinhold Pallas, Fritz Burkhard, Eduard Aigner and Griebel.
1936 In February the Kestner Society in Hanover organises the exhibition "Gerhard Marcks and Fritz Griebel"; the Kunstverein in Hamburg exhibits the part dedicated to Griebel and shows it as part of an exhibition from May 9th to June 7th. On both occasions, paper cut-outs by Griebel are presented.
1937 "Paintings, drawings, paper cut-outs", exhibition in Munich, Graphisches Kabinett G.Franke, Briennestraße.
1939 Griebel moves to Bamberg and marries the medical doctor Gertrud Jensen.
1940 Obligatory military service until 1945.
1942 Publication by Staakmann in Leipzig of Fritz Griebel, drawings with a postscript by Eberhard Lutze. In October, the Arts Service Berlin organises a sales exhibition with silhouettes by Griebel. This event is arranged by Gustav Seitz.
1943 Publication of a selection of 22 silhouettes realised in January 1940 (Fritz Griebel, silhouettes) by Staakmann in Leipzig. The excellent printing is the work of the fine art printers Ganymed.
1944 Griebel presents a large number of paper cut-outs in the framework of the exhibition "Guests of the Albrecht Dürer Society", organised by the Franconian Gallery in Nuremberg in February and March. In July, the Silesian Museum of Fine Arts in Breslau exhibits silhouettes by Griebel.
1946 Griebel is appointed professor of Landscape Painting and the Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts of Nuremberg which at this time is still provisionally housed in Ellingen Castle
1948 From 1948 until 1957 Griebel is director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. During his term of office, the planning and construction of the new academy buildings in Nuremberg takes place. A book with silhouettes is published in the collection "Lindauer Bilderbogen" by the publishing house Thorbecke
1949 Griebel moves from Bamberg to Ellingen.
1953 Griebel moves to Heroldsberg.
1954 In November the city of Worms stages an important exhibition with a large number of silhouettes by Griebel at the Kunsthaus Heylshof.
1957 From October to November the Städtische Kunstsammlung Karl-Marx-Stadt presents the work of Griebel as a silhouette artist with 150 exhibits.
1959 Fritz Griebel publishes a selection of his "Signs of Christendom", done on various types of paper (Laetare-Verlag, Nuremberg).
1960 In October the Städtische Kunstsammlung Karl-Marx-Stadt organises the exhibition "Fritz Griebel, watercolours and drawings", which brings together 182 works of art. In the same month the Galleria d’Arte Totti in Milano presents the artist to Italy: "Fritz Griebel, Dipinti - Disegni a Matita - Aquarelli - Intaglia in Carta".
1961 Johanne Müller, well-known as a specialist on silhouettes through her publications, edits a small book that is published by the Dresdener Verlag der Kunst: Fritz Griebel, paper cut-outs.
1962 From April 8th to May 7th the Friends of the Arts Society in Lindau-Bodensee organises the exhibition "Professor Fritz Griebel, Nuremberg, paper cut-outs and tapestries" at the Museum Lindau. At the same time the book-boat in Constance shows watercolours and paper cut-outs at Haus Thorbecke.
1964 The city of Nuremberg stages the exhibition "Fritz Griebel, work from 4 decades" with more than 150 works that give an important insight into Griebel’s art. Among the works exhibited at the Franconian Gallery from April 11th to May 10th are 23 paper cut-outs realised between 1935 and 1961.
1965 "Prizes decorated with paintings by Fritz Griebel", exhibition in Hanover, exhibition hall 18, State China Manufactory, Berlin.
1966 Griebel retires from his position as professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg.
1967 Griebel becomes an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg.
1967 The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh (USA) organises an exhibition with silhouettes by Griebel.
1968 In February 1968 48 new paper cut-outs are presented as part of the exhibition "Griebel - ceramics studio Kuch", organised by the technical college in Neugablonz. In March and April the Kunstverein in Heilbronn presents an exhibition "Hanna Nagel, pen-and-ink drawings, lithographies - Fritz Griebel, paper cut-outs, chalk drawings".
1970 From February until April the city of Bamberg and the Kunstverein in Bamberg mount the exhibition "F. Griebel, paintings, watercolours, chalk drawings, paper cut-outs". From September 8th to October 1st the Kunstverein in Erlangen organises an exhibition dedicated to Griebel in the Rathausgalerie in Erlangen. It includes, apart from paintings, watercolours, lino cuts and silhouettes from several decades.
1972 In February the company Siemens organises a Griebel-exhibition at its head quarters in Erlangen. From November 1st to November 15th Griebel gives insight into his work as a painter and a depictor of landscapes, showing 50 works of art. The exhibition takes place at the Evangelische Gemeindezentrum in Heroldsberg.
1973 From March to April the Kleine Galerie in Bamberg presents a selection of silhouettes as part of a Griebel exhibition. In April, more than 40 silhouettes are shown in the copper engraving room of the Kunsthalle in Bremen. From May 17th to June 16th the Dom-Galerie Konrad KG in Vienna organises the exhibition "Theodor Brün - Fritz Griebel - Josef Wedewer, watercolours and drawings" with about 25 works by Griebel from several decades.
1976 Fritz Griebel dies on September 29th.
1978 From August 30th to October 10th the Kunstverein in Gütersloh organises the exhibition "Gustav Seitz, sculptures and hand drawings and Fritz Griebel, paper cut-outs".
1979 From September 23rd to November 10th exhibition organised by the Albrecht Dürer Society, Nuremberg: "Aspects of a lifetime’s work: Fritz Griebel, watercolours, drawings, paintings", containing 188 works of art.
1980 Exhibition at the Albrecht-Dürer-Haus, Nuremberg: over 120 silhouettes from the years 1920 to 1965 (catalogue ISBN 3-418-00460-1)
1990 From July 28th to September 2nd the Fränkische-Schweiz-Museum presents pictures of Franconia as part of a special exhibition (catalogue ISBN 3-9801694-6-4).
1999 In October the Friends of Culture society in Heroldsberg organises a commemorative exhibition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Fritz Griebel’s birth. Most of the paintings and silhouettes are loans made by the citizens of the town (a magnificent collection showing what treasures the people of Heroldberg have).
2007 From March the Karin Dütz studio of silhouettes in Nuremberg presents over 40 silhouettes - masterpieces from five decades - to inaugurate the annual meeting of the German Society of the Art of the Silhouette.
